We’re moving into the spring months, and if you’ve made some resolutions for the new year then good for you.

It’s natural to want a new start, something fresh, and keeping it all together into the new year can be the catalyst for a brand new beginning.

We can’t go back in time, but we can manage thoughts we have and evaluate the benefits of doing things differently. Maybe it’s guilt for overeating, overspending and you may even have sorrow for treating others in a manner less than they deserved. We have three tips to help guide you away from the past and into the first part of this new year.

First and possibly the most important: Did you overspend? Many people do, while holidays and special occasions can be justification for this. It feels terrible after we’ve seen massive bills, even though we feel joy in giving. We can eliminate shame in overspending by understanding that we are human and can get heightened with holiday excitement. It’s okay, these celebrations are not meant to put a permanent kink in your finances though. Next time? Make a list of who gets the gifts with a budget. This will give you guidelines as to how much you have, where you can shop and keep things in order before you buy. If you have a process to keep your money secure, you will continue on your journey of maintaining wealth. If not, stay with us and we can help.

Second: Have you added a little winter weight when you swore you wouldn’t? Be kind to yourself. When we stress out, our bodies respond with chemicals that create weight gain. It’s best to plan differently next time. Bring in more vegetables (fresh frozen are inexpensive), use smaller plates when home and crowd the table with appetizers, not heavy dishes when entertaining. One binge won’t create lasting effects. Do not let this take you to a place of defeat, accept the past and move on gracefully. Accountability is key!

Lastly: If you’ve had some difficult time with friends and family over this past year, remember that everything passes with time. Different personalities can create chaos, this happens when humans gather. If this was you, take a look at yourself and apologize. If not, then learning how to let go can create space for new occasions to come in this new year. Moving on doesn’t mean leaving others behind, it just allows unwelcomed space to be cleared for new.

Happy Spring!
